PCB circuit boards are complex and can be classified by materials, structure, and processes. According to structure, PCB circuit boards can be divided into single-sided boards, double-sided boards, and multi-layer boards. Common multi-layer boards are four-layer and six-layer boards, while complex PCB multi-layer boards can have more than ten layers. This article will introduce several common types of panels.
1. PCB Single-Sided Board
A PCB single-sided board is the most basic type of circuit board in the PCB industry. As the name suggests, the wiring is on one side, and the plug-in components are on the other side. PCB single-sided boards were widely used in various industries in the early days, but due to the high wiring requirements of single-sided boards, each line must have a separate path and cannot cross; for PCB boards with more wiring, stability is insufficient, and performance is lacking, leading to a gradual shift towards double-sided boards. Therefore, the usage and yield of PCB single-sided boards are also gradually declining; currently, PCB single-sided boards are more commonly used in power boards.
2. PCB Double-Sided Board
A PCB double-sided board is a board with wiring on both sides of the material. An important feature of double-sided boards is the presence of vias, which connect the wires on both sides to form a circuit. The wiring on double-sided boards can interlace, which is the biggest difference from single-sided boards; double-sided boards are more suitable for complex circuits and have a wider range of applications. The cost difference between single-sided and double-sided boards is not significant, and without special requirements, various industries will prioritize double-sided boards; after all, the performance and stability of double-sided boards are better than those of single-sided boards.
3. PCB Multi-Layer Board
Simply put, a PCB multi-layer board is formed by alternating more single-sided and double-sided boards with insulating materials and positioning systems, and then interconnecting the circuits to create a multi-layer circuit board. For example, using one double-sided board as the inner layer and two single-sided boards as the inner layers can form a four-layer board through technology. The design of multi-layer boards is more flexible, and their electrical performance is also more stable and reliable. Currently, the most commonly used multi-layer boards in various industries are still four-layer and six-layer boards, while the consumer electronics industry uses higher-level PCB boards more frequently. Although multi-layer boards have advantages in performance, stability, and noise compared to double-sided boards, many companies and engineers still prioritize double-sided boards due to cost considerations.
